A Little Red Wine
A Little Red Wine Could Take You A Long Way!
There are more and more ‘baby boomers’ getting older and so living longer interests a
lot of more people that it did 20 years ago. People aren’t ready to give up their lives just
yet and want to live longer and longer, see their grand children grow, travel more and
later in life and generally be healthier and fitter than what their parents were at the same age. So we look to healthy alternatives to achieve this, from culturally defined eating patterns and diet and much better health care. There is much more research to support the healthier lifestyle that we yearn for as I guess new products that are proven to work can bring the developers a huge financial reward and satisfaction.
One of the really interesting studies has shown that the benefits of drinking wine that have been touted for a while, and are thought by many to be the reason why the French in particular can get away with eating such a high fat diet while enjoying a low rate of coronary disease, are actually true. A few years ago, another study by French research team, found that men who regularly drank at least two glasses of red wine daily were 50% less likely than non-drinkers to suffer a second heart attack. That is quite amazing really and so we should all enjoy some red wine in our daily diet and lesson the risk of heart trouble. Not hard to do of course if you like wine!!
Previous studies that have taken place with yeast, a small species of worm, and fruit flies have shown that resveratrol is a life extending, anti aging compound. It is a polyphenol antioxidant that is especially found in red grapes, particularly Pinot Noir, which are grown now in many countries and has grown in popularity dramatically over the past few years. In the USA the local wines come mainly from New York, Washington and Oregon, but there are many great Pinot Noirs coming out of Europe and lately some very special ones out of Australia and New Zealand (if you get a chance to buy or try an NZ Pinot Noir – do so as you will be amazed how good they are)!!
In a recent study from Italy, short living breed of tropical fish increased their life span by more than 50% after having a diet containing resveratrol. Not only did fish that were fed resveratrol live longer than the others in the control group, they also stayed livelier as they aged and displayed better memory in stimulus and response tests. After they died they were dissected and scientests found that the neurons in their brains hadn’t decayed as quickly as the other fish. There hasn’t been that sort of tests done yet on humans, but I’d be prepared to try it out and possibly live longer and healthier.
Resveratrol is an organic compound that amongst other places is contained in the skins of grapes that protects them from disease. It is extracted from the grapes during the wine making process and then the wine becomes a preservative for the resveratrol and so prevents its oxidation.
Testing has also shown that resveratrol that is in food supplements, oxidizes when exposed to air and so loses its effectiveness. Because resveratrol from wine has neither been extracted nor preserved it retains it’s quality, pureness and strength. So drinking grape juice or eating raisins doesn’t have the same effect as drinking red wine or taking resveratrol supplements.

Red wine could realy be the new miracle drug – and the best thing of all is that it’s completely natural!!
Other studies have also shown that wine, especially red wine, can help prevent colds, increase the levels of HDL (good) cholesterol, lower the risk of Alzheimer’s, reduce the size and number of fat cells in the body (weight loss), reduce the risk of prostate cancer and also has anti-inflammatory properties. So why wouldn’t you take a supplement evry day when it has so many positive benefits.
Drug companies are now trying to copy red wine or resveratrol because of the huge health improvement potential, but might not be able to preserve it’s health-preserving benefits plus with a manufactured drug who knows what the side effect may be.
Besides, resveratrol is freely available in red wine and not patentable as such – or resveratrol supplements will give you a stronger dose without any hangover.
