Resveratrol, Weight Loss and Type 2 Diabetes

Posted by KP on May 30th, 2010

When it comes to losing weight, the equation is pretty simple; consume fewer calories than you expend in a day.

That’s the simplistic view, although somehow it never seems to end up exactly that way.

There are billions of dollars spent every year on weight loss products, supplements, exercise programs and other diet fads, and yet we still can’t seem to win the obesity battle. In the last few years though, a new natural supplement product has come to market that may help those trying to lose weight, including type 2 diabetics to stay within the healthy end of the spectrum. The supplement called resveratrol which is predominantly sourced from the polygonum cuspidatum plant, is unlike most diet supplements in that it utilizes a combination of both natural & herbal ingredients which can help the body maintain health whilst losing weight.

The reason much of the Western world has issues with obesity and type 2 diabetes in most part lies with the modern combinations of stressful lifestyle and fast-food consumption, however by replicating aspects of the Mediterranean diet and lifestyle, where much healthier weight levels and longevity prevail, we may have discovered the magic wonder pill to fix all. In fact, there has been a lot of news in recent months about the supposed “French Paradox,” which is known for how the French people eat a diet high in fat, smoke, enjoy rich desserts, drink copious amounts of wine and still end up with better heart health than most of the rest of the world. One of the main differences between the French diet and other world diets would appear to be the consumption of red wine, which it has become known contains a powerful antioxidant known as resveratrol.

Resveratrol is also found in grape skins, blueberries, cranberries and other plants like the Japanese Knotweed (which is where most supplement resveratrol is sourced from). Recent animal and in vitro studies have indicated that resveratrol can have a positive effect on maintaining healthy cholesterol levels, supporting insulin health, normalizing blood pressure and optimizing the metabolic and immune pathways that protect cells and improve mitochondrial function.

So if you’re on the hunt for a healthy natural supplement that will do you ever bit of good in helping you with your obesity, and type 2 diabetes, you’d be hard pressed to find anything better than a quality resveratrol supplement.

Maintaining good type 2 diabetes control and taking a quality supplement like resveratrol is essential to minimize the damage high blood sugar can do to your body. Having type 2 diabetes is definitely a life changing disease, but it needn’t be a life sentence, because it really does provide the opportunity for you to start living a healthy, fulfilling life. If you want to get on top of your type 2 diabetes naturally, there are natural ways to control and normalize your blood sugar levels that definitely work. To find out how this can help you to control your pre diabetes, or type 2 diabetes condition, go to Diabetes Control.

Vitamins Antioxidants

Posted by KP on December 13th, 2009

Scientific research in recent years has identified several antioxidant vitamins – an added bonus for

nutrients already known to be essential to good health, and a partial explanation for how they interact with other molecules in the body to produce beneficial effects. A textbook discussion of Vitamin A 15 years ago would have described the nutrient’s role in vision, health of skin and other body linings, bone growth, cancer prevention, and immunity. Today, it would also mention that Vitamin A is an antioxidant, a molecule that protects body tissues from damage by free radicals (oxygen-containing molecules that can react with healthy tissues and cause damage and disease).

The vitamins most often added to antioxidant supplements typically include Vitamins A, C, and E. In addition to being crucial to specific body processes and to the health of certain tissues, these vitamins protect us against cardiovascular diseases, cancer, vision problems, infections, nervous disorders, and some of the physical effects of aging by virtue of their antioxidant activity. Antioxidant vitamins are often combined with other antioxidant nutrients to provide a broad range of protection.

As mentioned above, vitamin A has many important roles in good health. It is one of the fat soluble antioxidant vitamins, obtained in yellow, orange and green vegetables and in fortified milk. Vitamin A deficiency is serious and life threatening in the malnourished. It is readily available; however, when it is included in an antioxidant dietary supplement, only moderate amounts are used because too much Vitamin A is dangerously toxic. Creams and lotions containing Vitamin A may be beneficial to skin health, a theory that has lead to topical antioxidant supplements containing this vitamin.

Vitamin E is the second of the prominent antioxidant vitamins, and its antioxidant benefits have been known for some time. In the body, Vitamin E prevents damage to linings and cell membranes, and blocks oxidation of fats, particularly in the lungs where oxygen is present in copious amounts. It has been suggested that it may protect against heart disease, cancer, cataracts, age related macular degeneration, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s, although studies have been somewhat inconclusive and some have used an antioxidant dietary supplement while others have studied food sources. Toxicity from too much Vitamin E is rare and it is safely included in many antioxidant supplements as well as skin creams and lotions. In the diet, Vitamin E is found in green plants, nuts, whole grains and wheat germ.

Of the three best known antioxidant vitamins, Vitamin C is the only one that is water soluble. Where Vitamin E prevents oxidation of fats, Vitamin C prevents oxidation of water soluble substances in the body. Vitamin C plays a role in health of connective tissues, particularly collagen, strengthens immunity, assists with iron absorption, and functions in the release of stress hormones. Vitamin C is abundant in citrus fruits and in other fresh fruits and vegetables. Research suggests that most people get enough Vitamin C from the diet and do not require antioxidant supplements that contain it; however, large doses of Vitamin C are well tolerated and toxic effects are rare at daily intakes under 1000mg. A typical antioxidant dietary supplement will contain an amount of Vitamin C well above the recommended daily allowance.

A Little Red Wine Could Take You A Long Way!

Posted by KP on November 30th, 2009

Longevity interests a lot of people who aren’t ready to give up their lives, just yet, and who look to healthy alternatives to culturally defined eating patterns and “health care.”

The benefits of drinking wine have been touted for a while and are thought, by some, to be the reason why the French can get away with eating a high fat diet while enjoying a low rate of coronary disease.

A few years ago, a study by French research team also found that men who regularly drank at least two glasses of wine daily were 50 percent less likely than non-drinkers to suffer a second heart attack.

Previous studies with yeast, a small species of worm, and fruit flies have shown that resveratrol — a polyphenol antioxidant found in grapes, especially red grapes, and particularly pinot noir grapes which are grown in northern latitudes and used in wines coming from New York, Washington, and Oregon — is a life-extending compound.

In a new study from Italy, resveratrol has been used to increase the life span of a short-lived breed of tropical fish by more than 50%. Not only did fish given resveratrol in their food live longer than the control group, they stayed livelier as they aged and displayed better memory in stimulus/response tests. And the neurons in their brains didn’t decay as quickly when they died and were dissected.

Resveratrol, an organic compound contained in the skins of grapes that protects them from disease, is extracted from grapes by the wine making process. The wine becomes a preservative for the resveratrol and prevents its oxidation.

That’s why drinking grape juice or eating raisins doesn’t have the same effect; the resveratrol has neither been extracted nor preserved. It’s also been shown that resveratrol in food supplements oxidizes upon exposure to air and loses its effectiveness.

Red wine may truly be a “wondrous drug!”

Other studies have shown that wine, especially red wine, can help prevent colds, increase the levels of HDL (good) cholesterol, lower the risk of Alzheimer’s, reduce the size and number of fat cells in the body, reduce the risk of prostate cancer, and has anti-inflammatory properties to boot.

Drug companies are trying to copy Red wine may truly be a “wondrous drug!”, but might not be able to preserve it’s health-preserving benefits. Besides, resveratrol is freely available in red wine and not patentable as such.

Smoking and Anti Aging Treatment

Posted by KP on March 15th, 2009

Smoking and Anti Aging Treatment

Smoking is an addictive habit that has long term effects on your lungs and respiratory system apart from being a poison to your skin. If you are looking for anti aging treatments, smoking is the first thing that you might have to give up.

Smoking takes a toll on your health and skin especially if you are working in a closed space where there is constant passive or active smoke. So, how does smoking affect your health?

What actually happens is when smoke enters the body and releases free radicals that disrupt the formation of collagen which leads to early formation of wrinkles. Collagen is a protein that helps the skin be elastic, firm and old looking.

Tobacco smoke also has other long lasting ill effects on skin as the constant supply of oxygen is not there. The body’s ability for proper circulation and optimum oxygen is diminished and that in turn leads to scarred dermis. Smoking inhibits the body’s ability to make and store vitamins and minerals making the person susceptible to aging and sun damage. It also dries up your skin due to lack of proper blood circulation. Did you know that even holding a cigarette that is lit can damage your skin on your fingers?

Yes, the puckering of lips and even grasping a cigarette can cause burns or harden and yellow the skin around. Lips change colour and becomes dark while the skin shows other symptoms of aging. To understand why this happens, it is best to know that when one sucks in the puckered up lips required drawing in the smoke, helps in forming premature wrinkles. It also leads to hollow cheeks and squinting due to constant inhalation. Not only does smoking inhibit proper respiration but it leads to serious consequences of diseases like cancer, asthma and other respiratory diseases.

However, if you are looking to quit smoking, there are many different ways to ease off your withdrawal symptoms. A slight weight gain, sweating, shivers and similar symptoms may prompt you to take that one puff. What you need is some herbal based remedies that will not only cure the symptoms but help you take that first foot towards being nicotine free.

Today there are a wide range of products available that will help you conquer the addictive habit of smoking. You can try some non medicated pills, herbal sprays and even picking up a hobby that will divert your mind off smoking. It is for your own good health and for the families peace of mind that quitting smoking is the best.

Resveratrol an Anti Aging Supplement

Posted by KP on March 15th, 2009

Resveratrol an Anti Aging Supplement

What can a Resveratrol pill really do for you?  The supplement is being promoted as an anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, blood-sugar lowering, life extending miracle. But, what they fail to tell you is that the latest research proves that the nutrient has a very low bio-availability.

Stomach acid converts the active form of the nutrient to an inactive form that does not have the same activity. Basically, it causes twisting of the molecule. If it remains unchanged as it passes through the stomach, the untwisted molecule is small enough to pass through the intestinal wall and enter the bloodstream directly. This occurs with some proteins and other nutrients, as well.

In order to protect delicate nutrients from stomach acid, some manufacturers use an enteric coating. But, the coatings are more expensive and the cheap supplements don’t include them. So, the first thing that a Resveratrol pill must include is an enteric coating.

The second thing is that the formulation should be standardized to have high trans-Resveratrol content, 50% is best. It is the trans-Resveratrol type that has been used in laboratory studies. It is basically the “untwisted” form of the molecule.

The third thing to look for is a combination of other ingredients that enhance and work with the trans-Resveratrol to provide the greatest results. On its own a Resveratrol pill can only do so much. The activity that it has is not well understood, but assuming that the research theories are correct, it is not active against all types of free radicals. Basic antioxidants must be included or the other free radicals will damage the cells, even if trans-Resveratrol is present.

Some of the latest claims have been about weight loss, in particular fat loss, that supplementation can cause. These claims are based on studies conducted using animal models. There are no clinical trials to show the effectiveness or safety of this type of supplement for weight loss.

If you need to lose weight, a multi-nutritional supplement that contains chromium, green tea extract, gingko biloba, SAM-e and ATP can help, because they are compounds that have proven fat-burning activity. Other nutrients are important, as well. Just because you are overweight does not mean that you are well nourished. In fact, in all likelihood, you are suffering from mal-absorption, an inability to absorb nutrients from the foods that you eat. Supplementation can be highly beneficial.

Basically, a single-ingredient Resveratrol pill will do very little to improve your overall health. As an ingredient in a totally balanced formula, it’s great. Alone, it’s not going to do much.

It was believed to be the solution to the puzzle of the French paradox, a lower than expected incidence of heart disease in the South of France, despite a diet that is high in fat. Researchers have since proven that it could not possibly be the explanation for that puzzle. The amount that is present in red wine is too low.

The amount that is present in a Resveratrol pill may be too high or too low. 20-50mg per day is sufficient, higher than that could cause unwanted side effects. Look for a formula that includes that amount and lots of other different ingredients, if you want the best results.

Anti-Aging Secret

Posted by KP on March 15th, 2009

What is the Anti-Aging secret?

Minerals rank with protein as the most neglected, haphazardlyobtained nutrients in our American diet. And more especially in the diets of persons past forty. One of the ‘three starvations of later years,’ spoken of frequently in nutritional reports, is mineral starvation. (The other two ”starvations’ in older bodies are protein and vitamin B-complex.)Protein and minerals are so closely linked that to advise you to eat plenty of protein, without stressing the need for equal care in obtaining a full quota of minerals, would be to tell only half the Eat-and-Grow-Younger story. A report made this year to the National Academy of Sciences by a research team headed by Dr. Cannon emphasizes that the minerals potassium, phosphorus and magnesium are essential in the diet for proper use of all body-building protein foods. This research team discovered that omitting potassium from the diet could lead to eventual congestive heart failure. Dead tissue developed within the heart muscles six days after potassium was taken out of the diet. But when potassium was restored to the diet, the body muscles began to rebuild, and the dead tissues in the heart healed. In other words, with potassium again present, protein could resume its appointed task of repairing and replacing body cells. Protein and minerals are the chief actors in the nutritional drama, while vitamins play a secondary, although essential, role (vitamins, the front-page news of the past decade, are now recognized as being solely activators, that is, substances needed to set other substances into action). To neglect any of these three food elements is to wreck the nutritional drama. Yet to star vitamins over protein and minerals is an equally unsound practice. You can’t repair your body cells with vitamins alone, nor can you expect vitamins to do the nutritional work of minerals.

Each of the three food elements-protein, minerals, vitamins has its own specific task in preparing your body for a long, youthful life. If I seem to emphasize protein and minerals more than I do vitamins, it’s only because I feel certain the vitamin story is well enough known not to need detailed repetition in this book. On the other hand, I’m afraid the mineral story has been too often pushed into the background by ‘sensational’ vitamin news. Yet today, more than ever before, nutrition experts are turning to mineral therapy. The final report of the New York State Joint Legislative Committee on Nutrition for 1947 contains an article by Dr. C. Ward Crampton, noted authority on diseases of older persons, in which he .states: ‘The foremost nutritional defects in the mature and aging are calcium, iron and protein.

Seventy-five per cent of the men of sixty suffer a lack of one or more. On the other hand, many suffer dietary excesses, notably carbohydrates and possibly cholesterol.’Dr. Crampton goes on to report that the American diet is more deficient in calcium than in any other food element. Our ordinary menu is calcium-poor. This calcium deficiency accumulates, becoming increasingly serious as the person grows older. Calcium is so important an ingredient of your blood that your bloodstream will attempt to maintain its calcium level, even though it has to rob other body parts of their vitally needed calcium. That is why, in many older persons, the bones, robbed of their calcium by the blood, become more fragile, resulting in easily fractured arms, legs and hips. It is also why calcium-starved heart muscles and brain cells often give up the struggle to maintain normal functioning in bodies that are comparatively young in years. Your nerves, your heart, your teeth, your brain cells, your blood-all need sufficient calcium to remain healthy, and to function as nature intended. Commenting that ‘calcium poverty is one common cause of aging that can be corrected,’ Dr. Crampton prescribes a grain of calcium lactate for each year of your age, taken in three doses three hours after each meal.

An inexpensive and convenient way to obtain added calcium in the diet is through the use of powdered skim milk. This dry milk provides needed calcium and protein, along with iron, copper, manganese, cobalt and other trace minerals-less the fats which are wisely limited during the later years. Even though you obtain ample calcium in your diet, quite unknowingly you may be allowing certain foods to rob your body of this vital mineral. Beet greens and spinach contain oxalic acid which deprives the body of its calcium; but you can eat turnip greens, kale and dandelion greens with full assurance that you are not upsetting the balance of this valuable mineral in your body. In fact, dandelion greens that springtime dish of your childhood-have high calcium and vegetable protein content which make them an excellent spring salad. Also, don’t indulge in cocoa or rhubarb too freely, since both of them have a high oxalic acid content, and by frequent use of these two foods you run the risk of lowering your calcium reserves. It is Dr. Crampton’s belief that a deficiency of iron is nearly always present in the ‘uncared-for person in the higher-age brackets.’ He says that the typical person of sixty is anaemic, iron-poor and body-poor, unnecessarily so. And this condition is worse in those persons who are following some unwise diet because of ‘dyspepsia’ or ‘indigestion.’ Insufficient hydrochloric acid in the gastric secretions is a common cause of iron poverty in the older body.

Minerals that regulate everything in the human body from ‘sight to sex’ are lacking in a vast acreage of the croplands that spread across our country. Agricultural scientists are accumulating more and more evidence that a wide variety of human ills are caused by the poor nutrition furnished by foods grown in mineral-starved soils. Dr. K. Starr Chester, head of a staff of farm researchers, has announced that numerous studies show the soil in nearly every state lacks one or more trace elements-cobalt, copper, zinc, manganese, boron. All food grown on mineral-poor soil (and the soil on American farms is estimated to have lost from 50 per cent upwards of its mineral contents in the past fifty-five years) is dangerously inadequate in iron, calcium, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, magnesium and sulphur.

For this reason, I cannot say to you with confidence that such-and-such a vegetable or fruit will provide you with this, that or the other mineral. I can tell you that a certain food should provide certain minerals. But, strictly speaking, the only way I know of at the present time (until some of our high authorities and conservation experts wake up and make obligatory the preservation and restoration of minerals in the farm and garden soils of our nation) to give you foolproof advice on minerals is to recommend the use of a reliable mineral concentrate, provided you are in doubt about the mineral content of the foods available to you. The multiple-mineral concentrate is the best way to use a mineral supplement to the diet. In whatever way you choose to obtain your full daily quota of minerals, for the sake of the restored youthfulness and the long life you so ardently desire, don’t neglect these vital food elements. They are minute-to-minute essentials to your health.

Is Resveratrol Powder Effective

Posted by KP on March 15th, 2009

Is Resveratrol Powder Effective

I am sure that you have heard about all the amazing attributes that this wonder nutrient has,

but I can tell you resveratrol powder is not a very effective way to take it.

Many companies out there are selling high concentration quantities of it, telling you more is better.  Well quite the reverse is true as the health benefits of resveratrol powder are largely lost due to stomach acid.

I guess the thinking is if you take a big enough dose, enough will get through, but this is not the case.  Also there can be another unpleasant side effect.

If taken in very high doses, it can act as a laxative, which if you have no problems to begin with in that area, can lead to dehydration and loss of nutrients from the body.

Experts agree that the best way to take it is in the form of a multi supplement where the reaction with the other nutrients increases its powers significantly, and this is synergy at work.

Now the most important factor is that the supplement has a natural enteric coating, that is, it allows it to pass through the stomach and into the upper intestine where it is released.  You then get all the benefits, something which resveratrol powder cannot achieve.

This natural enteric coating is only used in the high quality supplements as it is more expensive to use, but the effects are far superior to your average one, where again much value is lost in the stomach acid.

It would be a real shame to lose the effects of resveratrol as it is emerging as one of the most promising anti cancer and anti aging substances ever found. So we must harness this power effectively.

So you don’t just want the benefits of resveratrol on its own and you will see vastly improved results if taken in a product that contains many ingredients that work synergistically together.

Make no mistake about it, resveratrol powder is not the way to go, so see through the companies hype and make sure you are getting the real benefits to be had from this amazing nutrient.

If you would like to learn more about the synergistic products which I personally take, including resveratrol, why not visit my website.

The Many Benefits Of Resveratrol

Posted by KP on March 15th, 2009

The Many Benefits Of Resveratrol

There may be many benefits of resveratrol, but one that you might find very interesting is that it acts as a ‘calorie restriction mimetic’. If you’re not sure what that means, you can learn about it in this article.

For many years, researchers have known that restricting caloric intake in laboratory animals increased their lifespan. Whether the same effect would be seen in humans has been an area of interest for quite some time and, if so, what the beneficial effects were due to.

Recently, a small study was conducted using human volunteers.
They followed a diet that provided 10-25% fewer calories than the average Western diet for a period of 3-15 years.

There is no way to determine if the diet increased the participants’ lifespan, but the health benefits were obvious. They included reduced BMI, very low LDL cholesterol levels, high HDL (good) cholesterol levels, very low triglyceride levels, low blood pressure, very healthy blood glucose levels and low levels of C – reactive protein, a predictor of heart disease.

The benefits of resveratrol and other calorie restriction mimetics could be all of these. They might also allow you to live a longer, healthier life.

There are negative effects of an extremely low calorie diet including nutritional deficiencies, muscle wasting, weakness, dizziness, lethargy, fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, gall stones, irritability and depression. All of these drawbacks were noted by participants in the study mentioned above.

But, we believe that it may be possible to get the positive effects, without the negative ones, by taking nutrients and other supplements that have the same effects as a calorie restricted diet. We call those things mimetics, because they ‘mimic’ the positive effects seen in caloric restriction.

The benefits of resveratrol that have been seen in animal studies include healthier glucose, triglyceride, blood pressure and cholesterol levels. This is why some researchers believe that resveratrol explains the lower incidence of heart disease that is seen in regular red wine drinkers. High glucose, triglyceride, cholesterol and blood pressure levels are hard on the heart.

Nutritional deficiencies will not extend your lifespan and will cause many health problems. Even deficiencies in the common vitamin D3 have been linked to heart disease, cancer and osteoporosis. Nutritional deficiencies are on the rise in the US, despite the increasing number of overweight people.

You can get the benefits of resveratrol and reduce your risk of nutritional deficiencies by taking a totally balance multi-nutritional supplement on a daily basis. The best ones contain appropriate amounts of resveratrol along with over 70 other important nutrients and extracts, many of which are calorie restriction mimetics.

The supplements were specifically developed in an effort to help people like you and I live longer, healthier lives. The ingredients are all natural, which is unusual, because most supplement companies use synthetic vitamins. They’re cheaper, but not as effective. We can only hope that the long term benefits of resveratrol will be realized in our lives, but there are some benefits that we have seen immediately. If you have a minute to spare, please take a look at my website now.

The Best Food Sources For Resveratrol

Posted by KP on March 15th, 2009

The Best Food Sources For Resveratrol

Are you frustrated with the conflicting reports on the best food sources for resveratrol?

And is food the best source? This wonder nutrient is important to include in our diet, so here are some of the best sources.

Primarily the highest concentration in food is to be found in the skin, seeds and pomace of grapes, hence the fact that red wine contains some too, as it is fermented longer with the grape skins.

However, red wine is not recommended as one of the best food sources for resveratrol due to the fact you would need to drink well over a liter a day to start to gain any benefit, and the detrimental effects of the alcohol would wipe out any gains.

Other sources are blueberries and peanuts, although in smaller quantities.
Here are the approximate amounts you will get:

1 cup red grapes – 1.25mg

1 cup peanut butter – 0.15mg

1 cup peanuts – 0.25mg

1 cup boiled peanuts -1.30mg

As you can see, even the best food sources for resveratrol are not enough to gain the maximum benefits, so to take it in supplement form is now the most popular way.

High quality ones come from the Japanese Knotweed plant, the most potent source on earth, and one the Japanese have long used for curing and healing many illnesses.

You should make sure that any resveratrol supplements you take only contain natural ingredients, with at least 20mg of the natural 50% trans type, which is the most active one.

I am sure you are aware of the many benefits of this wonder nutrient including helping to fight cancer, diabetes, heart disease and even increasing our lifespan. It is being hailed as the most effective compound to have ever been found to reverse the aging process.

So it is important to get our intake levels up and when combined in a natural multi supplement its effects are greatly enhanced, unlike the best food sources for resveratrol.

You will notice improved clarity of mind, and feel that you have more energy than before, as well as helping to potentially stave off future degenerative diseases when combined with other natural synergetic ingredients like ginkgo biloba and green tea extract.

I am sure many more wonderful discoveries lie ahead, but the fact that we already know the power of this nutrient, means we can start to harness that power now, even though the best food sources for resveratrol don’t provide enough, a daily supplement can provide all we need.

If you would like to learn more about the synergistic supplements which I personally take, including resveratrol, why not visit my website.

Resveratrol And The Health Benefits

Posted by KP on March 15th, 2009

Resveratrol And The Health Benefits

Let’s face it, we all want to look younger and stay healthy, so when people ask me does

resveratrol work, I have to assume it’s for one of those reasons, and there is much to be excited about.

It is only in recent year that resveratrol has come to light, especially after the stories about red wine and how it was now a healthy drink!

It is true that it contains some of this nutrient in it, but they are small and the negative effects of the alcohol cancel any benefits, so does resveratrol work via wine, the answer is only to a small degree.

It has been proven to fight cancer at all stages, with some dramatic results thus far. In studies it has also been shown to help protect against heart disease, diabetes, and even Alzheimer’s.

Perhaps the most fascinating revelation is that it is being hailed as one of the most powerful substances in modern times to help fight the effects of aging by actually slowing it down and even reversing it.

How does resveratrol work in connection with anti aging?

It seems that it is due to its powerful antioxidant powers it helps to eliminate free radicals, which are unstable atoms caused in part by pollution, sunlight, and our bodies natural burning of fat, that can lead to cancer, aging, and brain degeneration.

The pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline has recently invested nearly as billion dollars into resveratrol research to develop a variety of solutions. A sign of things to come, I’m sure!

To have a simple nutrient being able to accomplish so much is quite remarkable. Who doesn’t want to look and feel younger? And what is the best way to take it?

Experts now agree that it is best taken as part of a multi supplement, to gain the maximum benefits.

When these ingredients are put together they create synergy, which means you get the direct benefits of each nutrient and the benefits from their interaction with each other.

What does resveratrol work best with? It combines well with green tea and ginkgo biloba extract for starters, helping to improve the prevention of many diseases and improving memory and energy levels.

So I hope you can see the incredible benefits to be had and will make a point to include it in your diet, in supplement form, and who knows, you may well live a longer and healthier life!

So does resveratrol work? Most definitely!

Important Health Considerations Of Resveratrol

Posted by KP on March 15th, 2009

Important Health Considerations Of Resveratrol

Are you frustrated with the lack of proper information about the resveratrol pill?  There seems to be conflicting advice about the best way to take it, so here are some basic things you should know before you go any further.

I am sure you are well aware of the health benefits this wonder nutrient can provide you with, including protection against cancer, lowering of cholesterol and extending your lifespan too, if new research is to be believed.

A single resveratrol pill should contain at least 20mg of the natural 50% trans type, which is the most active one, and come from the Japanese Knotweed plant, the most potent source.

You should be aware also that resveratrol is synergetic with ginkgo biloba and green tea extract, and this enhances its ability to help improve its cancer fighting abilities among others.

Many experts now agree that it is best not to get the benefits from a single resveratrol pill, but to take it in a product that contains many ingredients in it that work synergistically with each other.

Simply put, you get the direct benefits of each nutrient and the benefits from their interaction with each other. A win-win situation and you will also save a considerable amount of money in the process.

Now one of the most crucial elements of any supplement is delivery. To be effective, it should have a natural enteric coating which prevents it from being absorbed by stomach acid in the stomach, and can instead travel through to the upper intestine to be released.

This is hugely beneficial and cannot be understated. As this type costs more to produce, it is only the very few superior supplements that will have it, so check the label carefully. The cheaper types will still give you some benefits but at a much reduced rate.

So the case for a single resveratrol pill is not a strong one, especially as this amazing nutrient combines so effectively with others and there can be no doubt of its potential.

I hope this information will point you in the right direction towards your health goals, and remember, it is your long term health that will ultimately benefit with a little help from this nutrient.

I think the most exciting research is where it shows it has the potential to extend life, and keep us healthy in the process! This is one of the benefits available to us and many more like improved mental clarity and more energy, which would not be possible with only a single resveratrol pill.

Resveratrol Capsules

Resveratrol Capsules

Ever wondered how this a seemingly standard nutrient can suddenly start being hailed as the most exciting substance ever found for its anti cancer and anti-aging properties?  Resveratrol supplements are now in demand, but you have to be careful how you take it, to gain the real benefits.

As you may know, it has been proven to be very effective in the fight against cancer due to it being a powerful antioxidant, helping to mop up the free radicals that can damage or kill our cells.

Also it is said to be able to reverse the signs of aging, lower your bad cholesterol and even be a potential cure for Alzheimer’s disease. No surprise then, that people want resveratrol supplements!

The best and most effective method is not to take it in a single pill, but to take it in a multi health supplement, where you can benefit from its reaction with the other nutrients.

When these ingredients are put together they create synergy, which means you get the direct benefits of each nutrient and the benefits from their interaction with each other.

For example resveratrol combines well with green tea and olive leaf extract and this interaction is highly beneficial.

You should also ensure that any resveratrol supplements only have natural ingredients, with at least 20mg of the natural 50% trans type, which is the most active one, and will give you the most benefits.

Another very important point is delivery. The very best ones have a natural enteric coating which means that it can get through the stomach acid unscathed and into the upper intestine where the greatest benefits are to be had.

This is not the cheapest form of delivery but absolutely vital if you want to gain all the health benefits to be had. Make sure to check the label carefully.

So to sum up, resveratrol capsules really can improve many aspects of your health, especially when taken as a combined supplement, so research carefully, as it will not only influence your present health but ultimately your long term health as well.

The Best Resveratrol Source

Posted by KP on March 15th, 2009

The Best Resveratrol Source

So I guess you’ve heard about this wonder nutrient and what it can do. But do you know how to find the best resveratrol source to get the maximum benefits?

We should all be thinking about how to include this in our health regime as the list is growing all the time about what it can do, including preventing heart disease, lowering cholesterol and even increasing our lifespan. So what makes the best resveratrol source?

I’m sure you have heard that it can be had from red wine, which is true, but you would need to drink heavily every day to get the real benefits! Other sources include blueberries, peanuts and the most potent from the Japanese Knotweed plant.

The Japanese have long used this as a healing tool, and it is only relatively recently here in the West we are discovering more about it.

To be effective, resveratrol needs to reach the bloodstream, and even after drinking a lot of red wine, only a small percentage gets through.
Experts now agree that the best method is via a health supplement,
preferably combined with other synergistic nutrients.

When these ingredients are put together they create synergy, which means you get the direct benefits of each nutrient and the benefits from their interaction with each other. A single resveratrol pill will only have limited health benefits.

For the best resveratrol effects, it should be combined with green tea extract and ginkgo biloba, among others, to enhance its antioxidant powers significantly.

You should also check that it is the 50% trans-type as this is the active form.

Perhaps the most important element is that of delivery. The supplement needs to have an enteric coating to be effective, and to make sure the nutrients aren’t lost because of the stomach acid, but reaches the upper intestine where it will have the greatest benefit.

This is not the cheapest option, which is why the majority of supplements out there are without it, so check the label carefully.

If you follow this advice you will be helping to safeguard you future health, receiving a boost from the multitude of natural nutrients, and this is the best resveratrol source and combination possible.

If you would like to learn more about the synergistic supplements which I personally take, including resveratrol, why not visit my website.

The Best Supplements to Use

Posted by KP on March 15th, 2009

The Best Supplements to Use

Even though many people take vitamin/mineral supplements, they are not the healthiest supplements to take and can be harmful.  There are superior supplements that are healthier and not harmful.

This is not about a specific product or brand.  For the past 50 years, Americans have been using vitamin/mineral supplements more and more. Yet these people have gotten fatter and sicker also.  Fatness and sickness go together.  As society’s obesity rate climbs, so does the type 2 diabetes climb.
People need to try to get their nutrition from food, not pills.  Many tablets pass through the digestive
tract without being digested. You can even get vitamins from soft drinks like Diet Coke Plus.

The nutrition from food is very different from the nutrition in supplements, regardless of the source.  The FDA does not allow more than 99 mg of potassium in a supplement.  If you go to a nutritionist/doctor, they will never give you more than 200 mg of potassium since you may need to be rushed to the hospital.  But it is okay to eat 2 avocados which contain 2,400 mg of potassium.  Four potatoes contain 3,200 mg of potassium and 4 bananas contain 1,600 of potassium and these are good to eat.  In fact, the FDA says to decrease sodium and increase potassium consumption.

Vitamins and minerals cost pennies to make.  They are either made with chemicals or extracted with chemical reactions.  They do not exist in nature this way.  If you consume too much vitamin A or D it can cause death from liver failure. So many nutritionists avoid them.  Instead many of them use greens drinks, like the authors of the best selling nutritional book, Fit for Life.  There are Greens Plus,  Vitamineral Greens (by Health Force), Green Vibrance (by Vibrant Health), Perfect Food (by Garden of Life), Miracle Greens and many others.

A major ingredient in the greens drinks is spirulina.  It is a sea plant (phytoplankton or blue-green algae).  Spirulina has more calcium than milk, more protein than meat or soybeans, more beta-carotene than carrots, more vitamin E than wheat germ, more iron than spinach and more vitamin B-12 than liver.  This is why it is known as a super food.  The greens drinks contain other super foods and other whole foods, instead of isolated chemicals like vitamins and minerals.  The human body was designed to consume foods, not isolated chemicals.

Unlike with vitamin/mineral supplements, people feel a difference when drinking greens drinks.  Some of them taste very good.  They also contain superfoods like barley grass, wheat grass and alfalfa grass.  The above ingredients are green since that is the color of chlorophyll. It is the blood of the plant.  The structure of chlorophyll is just like the molecular structure of your blood except your blood has a copper atom at the center of the molecule whereas the plant blood has an iron atom at the center of the molecule.  Chlorophyll has a cleansing and healing effect on the human body.  Some of these also have some vegetables in them like carrots, beets or spinach.

There are about 15 vitamins and 70 minerals.  But there are thousands of phytochemicals in plants that are beneficial to people.  One of them is lycopene that is in red grapefruits, watermelon and tomatoes.  It helps circulation and cancer prevention. Another is resveratrol which also helps circulation and prevention of cancer.  This is in grapes and grape juice so mix the greens drinks powders with diluted grape juice so you also get resveratrol. This is the famous nutrient that is in red wine that they mention on the news so that you will give wine to your little kids.  But it is not in the alcohol, but in the grape.

Another great thing about these greens drinks is the grasses are dried without heat so they contain a very large amount of enzymes.  There are no enzymes in cooked foods since all enzymes are destroyed by cooking. So instead of adding more chemicals to your body, you can add the healthiest foods or superfoods to your diet.  It is common that after people drink their first glass of greens drink, they have a strong craving for another glass of it. Go ahead, that means your body needs it.

Resveratrol Fights Type 2 Diabetes

Posted by KP on March 15th, 2009

Resveratrol Fights Type 2 Diabetes

Resveratrol is not new, scientists have been studying its effects for many years. Resveratrol is known for its ability to protect plants from bacteria and fungi, while previous research has also found it helps prevent the negative effects of high-calorie diets and has anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer potential.
As a cancer preventer, resveratrol is most effective in studies when it comes in direct contact with the cancer, such as skin cancer or gastrointestinal tumors. If you do drink, switching to red wine might be a healthier option than other forms of alcohol, but if you don’t drink, resveratrol is not a reason to start.

A novel group of drugs that target a gene linked to longevity could provide a way to turn back the clock on the diseases of aging. Resveratrol has also been reported to act as a sirtuin activator, and this property has been proposed to account for its anti-aging effects. Is it likely that drinking red wine, eating grapes or taking resveratrol in the form of supplements can slow down aging. While the news about red wine might sound great if you enjoy a glass of red wine with your evening meal, doctors are wary of encouraging anyone to drink alcohol because too much alcohol can have a host of harmful effects on your body. What makes antioxidants so interesting is their ability to prevent damage to body cells and prevent aging in many organ systems throughout the body, and particularly the brain and heart.

Will a pill someday be able to prevent some of the most debilitating effects of aging, including cancer and diabetes. It is promising to think that accelerated aging, diabetes and cancer could one day be treated with this natural compound. “As a drug, resveratrol may one day be used to treat fresh heart attacks and strokes, diabetes, as well as brain trauma. Resveratrol has been tested since 1994 against cancer, diabetes, heart disease and aging with extraordinary results. Resveratrol could virtually wipe out all existing medications for diabetes, cholesterol, heart attacks, strokes, cancer, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, or as Fortune Magazine says in their upcoming report on this miracle molecule: Hell, pretty much all age-related disease. In diabetes patients it has been discovered that resveratrol prevents cancerous pancreatic cells from reaching the bodies energy cells or mitochondria, and destroying them.

In recent years, resveratrol was further demonstrated to be an antitumor and chemopreventive agent and found to affect cellular proliferation through its action on tumor initiation, promotion, and progression . The mechanisms of such antitumor effects of resveratrol were found to be related at least partly to the inhibition of the glioma-induced angiogenesis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report demonstrating the effects of resveratrol on the tumor growth and angiogenesis of gliomas.

Resveratrol has captured the attention of the world’s health and scientific communities since experiments from the Harvard laboratory of David Sinclair first appeared in the journal Nature in 2003. David Sinclair, who led the research, said that resveratrol “reduced the deleterious effects of a high-calorie diet.

Resvinatrol Fights Type 2 Diabetes, resveratrol may one day be used to treat fresh heart attacks and strokes, diabetes, as well as brain trauma.

Should you Use Anti Aging Supplements

Posted by KP on March 15th, 2009

Should you Use Anti Aging Supplements

If you want to slow the aging process, consider anti aging supplements.

Here are some things to watch for.

Everyone wants to slow the aging process, even those who want to “age gracefully”.  However, there is a debate going on over whether using anti aging supplements will really work.

There are some that still believe that plenty of exercise, a proper diet and the right amount of sleep is really all you need to fight the aging process.

And if it works for them, who am I to argue? I’m a big proponent of exercise, diet and sleep. You have to start there for any anti aging program to work. But if you’re doing all that and you’re still feeling the effects of age, you may want to consider supplementation.

The fact is that researchers have now proven that vitamin supplementation can prevent several common chronic diseases. The average American diet does not provide the optimal amounts of nutrients. However, supplementation is not an adequate substitute for a good diet.

To start, a good quality multivitamin is the core of any supplementation program. With or without iron is a subject of argument, but I would recommend if you need iron supplementation, it should be taken separately as most people get sufficient iron in their diet and too much can pose problems as well as impede absorption of other vitamins.

Tips on Buying Anti Aging Supplements

* Research before you buy. Know what you are buying, the proper amounts, and any side effects

* Buy a quality brand. It should have a certificate of analysis, adhere to GMP standards, and use standardized herbal extracts.

* Check first for reactions if you are taking any prescription medications. Some supplements clearly state they are not to be used with certain drugs.

* Always check with your physician or an anti aging specialist for the proper dosage and combination.

Beyond that, here is a list of widely accepted (in the anti aging field) supplements you should explore further. I will be going into each one separately in future articles, but here is a brief summary:

* Alpha lipoic acid – a strong antioxidant that has proven to be helpful in a wide variety of conditions including diabetes, stroke, memory and brain function and numerous other benefits

* Acetyl L-carnitine – enhances memory as well as mental quickness

* Coenzyme Q10 - has been shown to improve many conditions associated with aging but is most known for it’s cardiac or heart disease benefits.

* Green tea extracts – green tea catechins may play a role in cognitive enhancement, maintaining proper weight and lowering risk of certain cancers

* Omega 3 Fish Oil -Fish Oil supports healthy heart and cardiovascular function, the function of cellular membranes and healthy brain development.

* Resveratrol - found in red wine, this powerful antioxidant provides anti-inflammatory, cardio protective and neuro protective functions.

* Ascorbyl palmitate – a fat-soluble Vitamin C, this antioxidant helps protect cells from free radical damage.

* Vitamin E – actually Annatto Tocotrienols, a new type of Vitamin E, helps to promote the cardiovascular system.

Bruce N. Ames, PhD, a professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at the University of California, Berkeley, swears by: his daily 800 mg of alpha-lipoic acid and 2,000 mg of acetyl-L-carnitine. In these amounts, he says, the chemicals boost the energy output of mitochondria, which power our cells. “I think mitochondrial decay is a major factor in aging,” Ames says–it’s been linked to diseases such as Alzheimer’s and diabetes.

This is not a comprehensive listing, nor should you go out and buy a bunch of supplements. Always check with your physician first and you may want to see a doctor specializing in anti aging.

You may also want to be tested first for any deficiencies – an important step before you start any supplementation.

Should you start an anti aging supplement program? That’s a personal choice and one Totally up to you. Give any program a chance to do its job – usually a month or two, before deciding if it works for you.

Don’t Stop Taking Vitamins

Posted by KP on March 15th, 2009

Don’t Stop Taking Vitamins

Latest Industry Backed “Study” Seriously Flawed and Biased

A “new” study condemning the use of vitamins as ineffective and potentially dangerous is generating headlines throughout the mainstream media in the United States and Europe.  Apparently generating headlines was the sole intention, as the study is neither new, scientific nor objective.

The “study” was led by Serbian scientist and “visiting researcher” at Copenhagen University Hospital, Goran Bjelakovic, whose name is now synonymous with vitamin meta-analyses (studies of other studies) which appear to show that vitamin supplements either dont work or end up increasing your risk of death. Two similar Bjelakovic “studies” on vitamin supplements, in October 2004 and February 2007, resulted in similar outbursts of negative international headlines.

Upon closer examination, the flaws in the so-called study are apparent.  First of all, in evaluating studies for inclusion, the authors omitted a massive 405 potentially eligible studies because there were no deaths in the studies and another 69 studies were excluded because they werent randomized controlled trials.

In other words, instead of conducting an honest review of all the studies, the authors arbitrarily eliminated all studies in which vitamins prevented mortality and kept people alive – leaving only the studies in which people died from various causes.  Most of the trials used pertain to already sick people being given very high dose, synthetic, isolated nutrients for relatively short periods – they therefore have no relevance to the vast majority of vitamin consumers.

When you select or reject studies on criteria that only mean something to statisticians, and ignore important things like duration, how long the study ran for which ranged from 28 days to 14 years your findings are immediately meaningless.  Even the huge difference in dose of supplements between different studies was not deemed important – for example, Vitamin E ranging from 10 to 5000 units daily.

The studies in the latest meta-analysis not only relied on synthetic forms of vitamins, in most instances they relied on very high dosages of pharmaceutical-grade, synthetic forms of supplements manufactured by the pharmaceutical industry.  The dosages used are typically much greater than those recommended on the labels of food or dietary supplement products.  In most countries, the dosages used in the trials would be considered medicinal by regulatory authorities and therefore would not legally be allowed for food or dietary supplements.

As a result, these studies actually apply only to synthetic forms of vitamins produced by the pharmaceutical industry in amounts much larger than most consumers would ever take. The authors of this latest Cochrane review state: “The present review does not assess antioxidant supplements for treatment of specific diseases (tertiary prevention), antioxidant supplements for patients with demonstrated specific needs of antioxidants, or the effects of antioxidants contained in fruits or vegetables.” This shows that the study has no relevance to natural sources of vitamins and minerals or antioxidants sourced from plants (e.g. flavonoids, anthocyanins, sulforaphanes, salvestrols/resveratrol, etc.), which are included in many of the leading-edge natural health supplements claiming potent antioxidant activity.

Make no mistake, this isnt research. This is a re-analysis of studies that have been conducted and reported on previously, by a group of men with a known axe to grind, who have never produced a study favorable to supplements, which is itself statistically unlikely unless you have a bias.

There is extensive scientific evidence that higher intakes of vitamins in the forms and combinations consumed in the diet substantially reduce risk of killer diseases such as cancer and heart disease. In fact, it is this research (some of which is referenced in the introduction to both the JAMA and Cochrane papers) that has stimulated pharmaceutical companies to undertake research on pharmaceutical-grade, synthetic forms of supplements, which they manufacture. As is often the case when pharmaceutical companies try to synthesize or unnaturally isolate compounds found in nature so they can patent and profit from them, their synthetic version have been largely disappointing.

A good source to see why their results have largely failed can be seen in this paper by the Alliance for Natural Health:

http://www.alliance-natural-health.org/_docs/ANHwebsiteDoc_231.pdf

As a final note on the study: although presented as a “new”, the study is really no more than a rehash of a paper by the very same authors, published last year (February 2007) in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). Extensive international media followed the 2007 JAMA paper, including a front page articles in major newspapers telling consumers that vitamin pills could cause early death. The “new” study review relies on 67 of the 68 studies used in the JAMA paper.

The world pharmaceutical empire is a trillion dollar juggernaut whose continued profits depends on continued illness as well as a continued monopoly on approved medications and suppression of any alternatives which might provide prevention and treatment more effectively, more safely and less expensively – such as those found in nature. And so there are a trillion reasons why we see the repeated headlines about misleading and flawed studies like this one on vitamins, minerals and other natural supplements that represent billions of dollars in potential lost profits due to improved health and competition with patented drugs.

The best possible model for profits would be a monopoly on side-effect laden drugs which lead to complications requiring yet more side effect laden drugs in a never ending cycle so that by the time a person reaches the age of 65 they take an average of 15 prescribed and over the counter medications daily when it all started with one or two conditions that could have been treated naturally. A great model for profits and a horrible one for health and humanity.

The bottom line for all those who reject such a model: dont stop taking your vitamins, minerals and other supplements- especially those derived from natural sources which insure adequate amounts of daily nutrition vital to your optimum health.
